I had truly believed at one point I was writing the greatest music of my life. I was embracing my inspiration and benefitting from a level state of mind and emotion; a combination of collected feelings and a positive surrounding was my secret. Such is life – where all living things eventually die and ‘all good things must come to an end’, my string of good writing evidently fell victim to these theories. Writers’ block had undeniably set in, and confidence dissipated. I had heard a good friend of my family once say that a writer writes their best during writers’ block. How could such a statement be true when you hate everything you write no matter what? Precisely why, he argues. Anything you write looks and sounds terrible, hence why we never show anyone anything, but it is important to understand that our own standards of what we consider good writing become inflated tenfold. Some of my most favourite songs that I have ever written are complete products of music I write during writers’ block. I’ve learned a few things, appreciate everything you write and most importantly save things.
I completely agree with you here. I used to paint constantly and was so proud of all the work I did. One day it just stopped. I could not even hold a paintbrush anymore without feeling totally empty. I struggled and even cried because I thought the passion was gone forever. Eventually, I forced myself to put whatever I was feeling onto canvas and one of my best art pieces was soon revealed. Stay strong my friend. The music is in you.

ReplyDeleteMy most creative choreography came out of a period of being completely stumped and bored of seing the same old thing done by everyone!
ReplyDeleteYou know, Shakespeare wrote his greatest works after long hiatuses!
I am not a writer my any means but for those long essays and papers I've done over the last 5 years I find the best cure for writers block to be a cup of tea!! I make sure to take a few minutes away from the computer and relax with a large cup of tea. Always cures the block!
