Who started claiming that club DJ’s were artists? I’m not talking about techno/house/electronica musicians who spend countless time making it ‘right’ in the studio and recording their own samples, I’m talking about DJ McScratcherson mixing Ludacris with Jay-Z at a bar and calling it his own. This song then makes its way onto the airwaves with a local radio DJ (insert late-night-radio club DJ from Toronto here) attached to it. I know this is no new argument and that it has all been said before, and that ‘I just don’t understand the club scene’ – sure; but how do you hold a match to even the most amateur of musicians who step onto a stage and sing and play in the most organic of fashion? There’s something about putting on headphones and matching beat patterns through two turn-tables and calling it your own that really drives me up the wall. How can one with years of practice and appreciation for the art of composition possibly except digital mixing n’ matching as a contribution to music? Dear DJs who release remixed top 40 song albums, how would you cope in a power outage? You bore me.
Wow. Could not agree with you more. Would I be considered a musician if I am awesome at DJ Hero? Because if so, I'm going out to look for a record deal.

ReplyDeleteThats so true. I also don't understand it. I mostly listen to hip hop, and I have noticed that trend there too. For example DJ Drama, has released 3 albums. I never heard his vocals on there, nor did he produce it. However when a single drops from that album, its by DJ Drama, featuring whichever artists are on there. I would like to know why?

ReplyDeleteI agree. DJ's are just ripping off other people's work and trying to make it their own. Make your own music. Stop living off of someone else's artistry. It's so cheap and ignorant. If you have true talent than make something for yourself.

I think that the definition of music is different for everyone. To be a good DJ you really need to be able to hear and feel the music in a way that people like me would never be able to, and they know what will get people moving.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that there are a lot of poser and wannabe DJs out there in da clubs, and I hope that you are just referring to them in this post and not all DJs. Because you can't tell me that some of them don't have talent and musical composition skills.
